  Yung Liu was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1949. He arrived in the United States in 1978 when he became the artist-in-residence at the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History in Virginia. He was then invited to hold the same position at St. John’s University in New York. In 1991, Taiwan’s public television station invited him to undertake the research for a documentary series, “The Spirit of Chinese Culture.” At the same time, he founded Shui Yun Zhai Cultural Enterprises, which he continues to manage, in addition to working as a professional writer and artist.
  Liu has held over 30 personal exhibitions, and his paintings have been collected by renowned museums around the world. Sotheby’s, which regularly auctions his works, describes his unique style as the combination of utilizing ancient techniques, developing a contemporary manner, and contemplating philosophical thoughts. He commonly uses fine lines and delicate yet powerful brushstrokes to depict landscapes, birds, and flowers. Art critics have especially praised his Mogu style as the highest achievement in Chinese fine arts history.
  Liu’s written works, which range from non-fiction essays to novels, have garnered him the honor of being the best-selling author in Mainland China and Taiwan. He has also toured Mainland China, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Singapore to speak on educational topics before audiences of thousands. In addition, he is continuously involved in non-profit work—most notably donating 100,000 greeting cards to the American Cancer Society and providing funds to build 40 elementary schools in rural China.

========================================
========================================
========================================
========================================
========================================
========================================
========================================
========================================
========================================
========================================

Yung Liu (1949- )

Yung Liu is a publicly recognized Renaissance man with distinguished accomplishments in fine arts, literature, public speaking, drama, and journalism. He was invited to participate in the Asia Contemporary Art Exhibition at age 23 and the National Art Exhibition at age 25. At age 28, his work entered the collections of the National Museum of History, the National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, and the National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. He became Artist-in-Residence at the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History in Virginia at age 29 and then at St. John’s University in New York at age 31. Not only did he win first place in the fine arts department exhibition at the National Taiwan Normal University, he was also an apprentice of Huang Jun-Bi and Lin Yu-Shan, Taiwan’s masters of landscape, bird, and flower painting. Such education—in combination with a foundation in Western painting from studying in the U.S., clear sketching technique, and background in literature—has led to a naturally extraordinary spirit and the development of his unique style.
Liu’s landscape paintings have acquired the name of “Dreamscape” for their three-dimensional fantastical quality. The style merges the boneless strokes of bird and flower painting, self-invented boneless texture strokes, rich color gradations (best for depicting atmosphere), and his exclusive spray-painting technique. His bird and flower paintings not only present the shape and nature of the subjects, but the artist even seems to lose himself in his subjects. These works present a dancing, lively beauty within stability, and esteemed critic Zhang Longyan praised them as sometimes surpassing the works of master painter Yun Shou-Ping.
For these reasons, Liu has become one of the extreme few living Chinese painters to be included in Sotheby’s international auctions, and his works frequently sell for millions. Numerous books on his artwork (including The Affections and Artistry of Yung Liu), theory, and techniques have been published and internationally distributed by Shui Yun Zhai Cultural Enterprises Inc. (Taiwan), Gansu People’s Art Publishing House, and China Braille Press.
Liu paints with extreme care at only the most worthwhile moments, and he seldom shows his work. Although he had held 30 exhibitions around the world at a young age, he has rarely appeared at public events over the last 20 years, with the occasional exceptions of international exhibitions and auctions. His literary accomplishments and worldwide fame—with books published in Chinese, English, Korean, and Thai—have further overshadowed his artistic reputation. Outside of the industry, many people are unaware that Liu is both a writer and an artist.
Of course, Liu’s painting and writing are very much interconnected. Because of his literary level and perception, his art has the essence of poetry. Likewise, his artistic eye enables his words to come to life, so that his poetry has the essence of art. Remembering Yung Liu in history alongside master writer-painters Wang Wei, Tang Yin, and Zheng Xie is a realistic possibility.
